Re: Seasonal high water table determination (SHWT) for sediment pond areas, John
Gillis tract, off Galatia Church Road (behind Lowes facility), Cumberland County, North
Carolina
Dear Mr. Speight,
An evaluation of soil properties has been conducted at your request on the
aforementioned property. The purpose of the investigation was to determine soil water
table depths (SHWT) for use with sediment pond design.
Soils at this site are most similar to the Gilead and Johnston soil series (see attached
boring log). Three borings were advanced to at least 4 feet. Seasonal High Water Table
(SHWT) as determined by evidence of colors of chroma 2 or less (and/or concentrations
of high redox mottles) was encountered at varying depths (the attached chart shows
boring locations and depths to SHWT).
I trust this is the information you require at this time.
Sincerely,
Mike Eaker

Typical Soil Boring Log (Gillis Property, Galatia Church Road), Cumberland
County, NC (Borings 5001 & 5003)
This map unit consists of moderately well drained soils on uplands. These soils formed
in clayey sediment on uplands. Slopes range from 6 to 15 percent.
A - 0 to 4 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/1) loamy sand; weak fine granular
structure; very friable; many fine and medium roots.
E - 4 to 13 inches; light yellowish brown (IOYR 6/4) loamy sand; weak medium granular
structure; very friable; many fine and medium roots.
Btl - 13 to 21 inches; brownish yellow (IOYR 6/6) sandy clay; weak medium subangular
blocky structure; firm; slightly brittle; few medium roots; few flakes of mica; many
coarse sand grains.
Bt2 - 21 to 48 inches; mottles strong brown (7.5YR 5/6), brownish yellow (IOYR 6/6),
and light gray (IOYR 7/2) sandy clay and sandy clay loam; weak medium subangular
blocky structure; very firm; brittle, many coarse sand grains; few flakes of mica.

Typical Soil Boring Log (Gillis Property, Galatia Church Road), Cumberland
County, NC (Boring 5004)
This map unit consists of very poorly drained soils that formed in loamy, stratified fluvial
sediment on floodplains along streams. Slope is less than 2 percent.
A - 0 to 48 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) loam; weak fine granular structure; friable.
