DEQ-CFW 00088253 • J 2000 Air Emissions Determination Nafion° Semiworks 3 Facility (NS-J3) Source of VOC's is exclusively dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) In 2000, approximately one (1) gallon of hydrolysis solution was used. This solution contains no more than 30% DMSO. Assume all DMSO was lost as a VOC. 1 gallon of solution x 30% DMSO = 0.3 gallons of DMSO 0.3 gal DMSO x 9.13 lb/gal = 2.74 lb DMSO = 0.0014 Ton DMSO (VOC) This is a extremely high estimate of the air emissions, since the vapor pressure of DMSO is 0.5 mmHg at 20°C, and therefore its evaporation rate would be minuscule. Additionally, all the hydrolysis solution is collected in a drum and pumped into the waste hydrolysis tank in the Products Area. Field tests have indicated that there is no loss of nitric acid (HNO3) to the air during normal operation. DEQ-CFW 00088254
