Department of Environmental Quality has lost about 70 permitting, inspection and enforcement positions. These position cuts have led to a 40 percent backlog and approximately two-year waiting period for new and renewed permits. Statement We have been redirecting our resources to cover the gaps as needed to ensure we are able to fulfill our mission to protect public health and the environment. But as issues such as the discovery in our waters of GenX and other emerging chemical compounds have illustrated, we need this emergency funding to help our agency begin to close the gap for protecting our drinking water resources in a more sustainable manner.
