Re: MEMO: Water Quality State Action Items
Jordan,
Thank you for the follow up on my email.
Hi Sheila,
Thank you for your assistance on our water problems here along the lower Cape Fear. We met briefly when you
visited Wilmington for the closed meeting with Chemours. I joined the group for the post meeting briefing.
My email to Jordan concerned the fluorocarbons beyond GenX. The StarNews has reported fulsomely about
that one chemical. However Detlef Knappe's research tells us that it is only about one-half of one percent of the
fluorocarbon load here and his support materials indicate that it is just under 6% of the molecular weight of
fluorocarbons in his tests. I don't want to lose sight of that other 95%.
I write to urge the relevant authorities in their actions, including the review of the NPDES permit, address all of
the fluorocarbons in the Cape Fear River.
As an aside: Wilmington's City Council adopted a resolution decrying Chemours' action. In it we invited
Chemours representatives to visit Wilmington and explain their course of action and hear from area residents.
The Mayor followed up with a letter to Chemours inviting them to visit. I believe it would be in Chemours, and
everyone's interest, for the company to appear. Sure, some folks would share their frustration. But a
presentation would go a long way to address local concerns and provide Chemours with an opportunity their
interest in resolving this issue.
Thank you for all you are doing.
Paul
