By The Editorial Board
As Gov. Roy Cooper announced hewould veto House Bill 56Wednesday, xmwere just
learning that the possibly carcinogenic GenX has been found in private wells near the
Chemours plant, which sits on the Cumberland- Bladen county line. Two days earlier, we
learned that state officials were investigating the possibility that the chemical, used in the
manufacture ofTeflon, might have been emitted into the air aawell aswater.
Given the widening probe into chemicals originating inthe plant, the governor was right to
veto a measure that rebuffed his request for monitoring and research funding and also
weakened protection for landfills, river basins and beaches. If lawmaker's decide to override
the veto, it will be thoroughly irresponsible. What they need to do instead is fix House 8i|| 56

vital to every person and community in North Carolina and stopping threats to our water
safety is top priority for state govemment.^ He added that, "When it comes to drinking
water, there is no room for political posturing or hollow solutions. We must keep our eye on
the ball to monitor our waterways and ensure that all North Carolinians can have fu||
confidence inthe water they drink.^
Anyone whose drinking water comes from the Cape Fear should have little confidence in the
water they drink. For people downstream from UheChonmuns plant, dhere'sGenX, which is
linked 0ocancers inanimals, and alist ofother "emerging contaminanbs,^many nfwhich
haven't been named yet but are chemically similar to GenX and its Teflon - ingredient
predecessor, CD. For the rest o[us, there's the cancer -causing 1,4'dioxone, which appears to
be coming from somewhere in the Greensboro area. And then there's the runoff from factory -
farming operations up and down the river, which led American Rivers to put the Cape Fear on
its 10-mnat-endengeredlist.
And yet, when the governor seeks $2.6mi|Uon to deal with what could beaserious health
emergency affecting hundreds of thousands of residents, General Assembly leaders play
power politics with him and all but ignore the health and safety of lower Cape Fear basin
residents.
Cooper's veto was well-timed and appropriate. The next time they're inRaleigh, our
lawmakers need to put people ahead of petty politics and give state government the GenX
funding itneeds 0oprotect us all.
