These 11were out ofeninitial round oftests on32households? If these 11 sites are mostly north of the plant, does that mean they are in Cumberland County? Ten sites inCumberland County. One inB|adenCounty. This is a precautionary measure because they represent the findings of one set of tests alone? This is precautionary measure because the data from [hemours has not been validated. It is preliminary. DEQ is now in the process of testing wells frorn 31 ADDITIONAL sites? No. DEQ is sampling private wells in properties adjoining the plant. But there are some wells that Chemours tested that we are testing as well. What about that letter from Chemours I asked about Monday? Chemours late last week (Sept. 8) blasted the state's response to its chemical discharges into the Cape Fear River, accusing the Department of Environmental Quality of misleading the public about what it knew and when, as well as reacting with "inexplicable secrecy" as the company tried to work with regulators. In a letter to DEQ's in-house attorney, the company described itself as a good corporate citizen "stymied by DEQ at every turn" and exasperated by unrealistic demands. It pointed to at least two efforts going back to 2002 to turn DEQ's attention to chemical discharges similar to the ones now causing pollution concerns in the river, saying they essentially were met with silence. There's "no basis," the company's attorneys argued in the letter, for the state's accusation last week that Chemours misled regulators. .(Travis Fain, WRAL NEWS, 9/15/17). Out of an abundance of caution, the state directed the company to supply bottled water ioresidents after receiving word Friday of the first batch of preliminary test results, and then again on Tuesday when Chemours notified the state o[another batch o{preliminary results. "We want to make sure people with elevated concentrations of GenX in their wells have an immediate alternative water source," said Michael Regan, secretary of the N.C. This week, DB0has continued collecting water samples for residential wells nearest the facility. Aso[Wednesday, D80had collected water samples for 31 residential wells in Bladen and Cumberland counties.
