Public Information Session to be Held at Saint Pauls Middle School to Discuss Private Well Sampling
N.C. Department of Environmental Quality Staff Will Be Onsite to Answer Questions
RALEIGH — The North Carolina departments of Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services will host a public
information session Thursday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Pauls Middle School, located at 526 West Shaw Street in
St. Pauls, to discuss upcoming private well sampling with residents adjacent to the Chemours Fayetteville Works facility.
Chemours submitted a work plan to DEQ to sample residential wells one mile from the center of the facility. This Friday,
state environmental staff will begin sampling residential private wells adjacent to the facility to augment the company's
work plan after preliminary state test results released last week detected GenX in violation of the state groundwater
standards in non -drinking water wells at the Chemours' Fayetteville Works facility.
"We are working to determine the extent of the contamination to see if it has impacted drinking water in people's wells
who live near the facility," said Michael Regan, secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. "We know people
have questions about the private well sampling, and we want to give them the opportunity to ask questions and get answers.
Once we have the results from this sampling effort, we can make decisions on what our next steps will be."
DEQ staff will visit residences adj acent to the Chemours facility this Friday to begin collecting private well samples. The
samples will be taken to Gel Laboratories in Charleston, S.C., for analysis of GenX and other legacy fluorinated
compounds.
Residents attending the infon-nation session will have an opportunity to sign up to have their well tested. State
environmental and health experts also will be on -hand to provide information and answer any questions residents may
have.
DEQ decided on this course of action after samples from groundwater monitoring wells in August show concentrations of
GenX that exceeded acceptable limits in 13 of 14 industrial wells at the plant. Preliminary test results have identified other
detections of flourinated compounds.
Last week, state officials cited Chemours with a notice of violation based on the preliminary results and initiated other legal
action against the company.
