Services have been actively investigating the situation at Chemours"
Today, DEQ will initiate additional enforcement action against Chemours after
groundwater samples taken in early August detected exceeclances of GenX and
another perflourinated compound in violation of state groundwater standards.

This measure stems from DEQs receipt and validation earlier this week
preliminary sample results from 14 groundwater monitoring wells at the
Chemours" Fayetteville Works facility. I

• Preliminary test results have identified other detections of flourinated
compounds.
The Environmental Protection Agency also took samples from the same 14
wells and sent the samples to the EPA laboratory in RTP.

Our focus is on public health, and as such, we've been in consultation with the
N.C. Department of Health and Human Services to determine our next steps.
Typically, when a facility has exceeded the groundwater standards, that facility
submits its results to the state's Division of Waste Management whose staff
validates it. Then, the facility provides a sampling plan that shows how it will
I want to reiterate that Chemours has yet to provide its sampling results to the
state, nor has it provided a sampling plan for additional private well sampling
in the community.
Both departments decided, based on the Gel Laboratories data results, to
immediately initiate a private well sampling plan in communities adjacent to
the facility.

Both DEQ and DHHS staff, along with the health departments' staff, will go ou!
to request permission to sample residents' private wells.
State and local health department staff will be on hand to answer any health -
related questions regarding the private well sampling plan.
These private wells will be sampled for GenX and other chemical compounds
the EPAhas reported during our investigation of the surface water.

We will hold a community meeting with local officials and citizens to discuss
test results and private well sampling.As part of our planning, we are careful
watching the path of Hurricane Irma. I
Along with residential private well sampling, the Department of Environmental
Quality will sample its six ambient wells near the facility for GenX and the
other chemical compounds analyzed in our surface water investigation.

water sampling the state has already conducted that there are any signs of
GenX in private drinking wells at sites along the Cape Fear River where the
