Why I wrote this
Earlier this year, I did a project about recycling with my friend Ellie. We wanted people to know about how
recycling can help our ocean and its animals. We care about the ocean and our river. And our people.
I'm writing this because I heard my parents talking about GenX, which is the chemical in the Cape Fear
River. GenX is linked to cancer. It has been found in our drinking water system in the CFPUA, which
cannot filter it.
Two scary things are that there are three counties that are affected by GenX. There are 250,000 people
affected by it!
My second reason that I'm scared is my friends at school and students in general are getting affected.
Even though I am young and I don't understand most of this, I know one thing, why should the people in
the factory be able to dump GenX into the river?
GenX does not help us, the river or help our ocean. GenX hurts us.
