8. PROJECT SUMMARY: The applicant proposes to remove the 3 existing docks and
construct a + 475' long by 10' wide dock at the NWL along Far Creek. A + 150' long
by 5' wide dock is proposed at the NWL along the adjacent canal. The applicant
proposes 10' by 10' access ramps to be located each 100' along the dock.
Project setting
The applicant's property is located in Hyde County off SR 1100 on the north side
of Far Creek in Engelhard, North Carolina. The site varies from 1.5' to 5.0'
above mean sea level. The property is bordered on the east by coastal wetlands
dominated by Distichlis spicata and has a mooring dock along the creek. The west
end of the property is bordered by a manmade canal.
The southern portion of the property fronts Far Creek and has several old piers
and an existing fish house. This area is vegetated with upland grasses, shrubs
and several mixed hardwoods. An approximately 30' by 40' area of coastal marsh
containing D. spicata and Scirpus spp. is present approximately 50' upstream of
the fish house. The western portion of the property fronts a manmade canal and
is vegetated primarily with mixed hardwoods and shrubs. The remainder of the
property is developed with several small homes and outbuildings and is vegetated
with upland grasses and a few shrubs.
Far Creek is classified as SC HQW by the Environmental Management Commission and
as a Primary Nursery Area by the Marine Fisheries Commission.
Project description
The applicant proposes to remove the existing docks and construct an
approximately 475' long by 10' wide dock at the NWL along Far Creek. An
approximately 150' long by 5' wide dock is proposed at the NWL along the
adjacent manmade canal. Also proposed are 10' by 10' access ramps located
approximately every 100' along the entire dock.
Anticipated impacts
Localized turbidity is expected during the construction of the dock. This
section of Far Creek is a commercial harbor of refuge and the proposed project
will offer increased space for mooring of commercial fishing boats and their
associated impacts.
