RALEIGH —The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality is requesting that Chemours stop releasing from their
Fayetteville facility two unregulated chemical compounds identified in a new EPA report that looked at perflourinated
compounds in the Cape Fear River other than GenX.
State environmental officials today released results for GenX sampling for weeks six and seven, as well as five other
unregulated chemical compounds studied by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The federal environmental agency used anew methodology, known asmass spectrometry, todetermine that five other
chemical compounds showed peaks. While the EPA does not know the exact concentration because no standards exist
for the compounds, they have confidence inthe chemical identity.
The other five chemical compounds are known as Nafion byproduct 1, Nafion byproduct 2, PFIVIOAA, PF02HxA and
PF030A. There is not enough health data to determine a health goal like there was for GenX, but health officials say the
water in the Wilmington area is still safe to drink.
The state's environmental department will continue to sample for GenX as their investigation continues.
"While our sister agency, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, does not have enough health
data to set a health goal for these emerging, unregulated compounds, we will continue to monitor for GenX to ensure
the results remain below the health 8ua|u of 140 parts per biUion," said Michael Regan, secretary for the N.C.
