Cooper's about the Chcnoursdischarge permit. OEQ-CFVV_00081038 Denial nfChemnaea'Permit Application Chemours is in the process of applying for a new NPIDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit, a federal permit program that controls water pollution and is managed by North Carolina DEQ. Today, Governor, Cooper announced that DEQ will deny Chomouro'permit request 1mrelease GonX.issuing enew draft permit that prevents GonXrelease. Acknowledging the potential for other possibly harmful compounds, Chemours' draft permit will include a clause authorizing the state to quickly re -open the permit if needed to regulate and enforce levels of any of emerging compounds based on new scientific findings. Does this Imply that the current expired permit (NCO0003573), which I understand remains in place administratively, allowed C hemour's 10discharge GenX? Does Chemours' permit renewal application of April 27, 2016, seek permission for the discharge of GenX? Or were the active permit and"'or application for, renewal too vague or) GenX, and any new permit will explicitly ban GenX discharge? In other words, what rules concerning GenX would a new permit now need to require that the other two did not?
