Had it not been for the state -led investigation, we would not have learned of the additional discharges.
However, water samples collected in the Cape Fear River revealed that higher levels of GenX than would
have been expected were still in the river after Chemours said it had diverted the wastewater discharge.
This information led the company to find the other areas atthe facility where GenXvvau being
discharged. As a result of DEQ!s ongoing investigation, we confirmed during a follow-up inspection that
the company had halted the affected industrial activities and stopped the additional wastewater
discharge.

"CFPUA environmental counsel sent a letter to DEQ Secretary Michael Regan Friday to
follow up on our June 19 letter and June 16 resolution. The additional GenX pollutants
found being discharged by Chemours this week would have been found and halted
weeks ago had DEQ promptly implemented the sampling grograrn reguested by CFPUA
in our June 19 letter. We renewed all of the requests slated in that letter in today's
letter. "
