A StarNews special report last month revealed that C;hemours -- and before that DuPont -- has been releasing GenX into the Cape Fear River on -and- off since igSO as a discharge fr-om a vinyl ether process being conducted at its t-0ay€ tteAll€ Works plant. C;iiPUA's aquifer storage and recovery, (ASR) is designed to take treated water from the Sweeney NVater Treatment Plant and let it drain into the Upper Peedee Aquifer, where it is stored to be pumped out later for drinking water. Executive Director Jim Flechtner said Wednesday during C FPUA's Board of Directors meeting that Catlin Engineers and Scientists will remove 49 million gallons of water injected into the Upper Peedee Aquifer and test it for GenX. The contract is not to exceed 50,000, officials said. "The authority carve tip with this idea," said Tick Catlin, an environmental engineer and former state representative. "They want to make sure There are no concerns." CEPUA officials said the project is in its planning phase, but primping could start in less than a month. The eater taken from the ASR i4rill likely be primped into the waste water system where it will pass through the Northside Wastewater' Treatment Plant across from the airport and discharged into the river. Frank Styers, CFPF A's chief operations officer, said in June CFPF A does not believe that water from the system has migrated beyond a 300-foot- radius "sphere of influence" around the well that feeds it. 'The nanofiltration plant in Ogden draws its water- from the Peedee Aquifer, but nowhere near the zone of influence of the ASK. project, CFIPF A officials said. Sayers also said the system, which is located near Westbrook Avenue just off :Military Cutoff Road, is not yet fully operational. "We will not Arthdraw eater for drinking until we understand the issues associated A th GenX," Styers said. Flechtner also talked about the recent Genf. test results. Tuesday afternoon, C'iiPUA said samples taken June 26 and tested by Eurofrns Scientific showed 149 parts per trillion of GenX in raw water and 156 in finished water at the utility's Sweeney Treatment Plante Then, on July 3, numbers in finished water had further declined to 55.4 parts per trillion. Samples taken pJuly S showed 93. and 87.4 parts per trillion in the raw and finished water, respectively. "While the levels have come down; there is still GenX in the water," Flechtner said. He added that C°F<PUA was also taking water samples from the nanofiltration plant in Ogden, but don't expect to find any GenX in the ground water. DEQ-CFW 00080208 Flechtner told the board Wednesday CF-PU.A is looking at legal remedies to determine if the authority is owed damages. He said CFI PI hired Brooks Pierce, one of the top environmental law firms in the state. "Our primary concern is to make sure if people are putting something in the rivet, they are complying with their pert -nits,," Fleclitner said in an interview last with the Stat"News. "Those permits accurately and fully protect the so urce water such as ours. We will study all of our options in terms of legally getting remedies."
