Hi, Marla. It probably would be helpful for you guys to have a copy of the Chemours' most recent NPDES
permit application, since we'll be referring to it. The one I have has a cover sheet dated April 27, 2016. Please
let me know if there's a later one or any subsequent submissions that I should be aware of
Otherwise, I'll look for your call at 11: 15 a.m. Again, my number is (910) 264-8338.
Meanwhile, I'm working on a separate story with a deadline of 4 p.m. today that updates the water testing.
Among other things, I'm hoping to get answers to these:
1) What's the status of the testing -- what's been done so far? What's coming up this week and later? When
might we expect results? And, can you tell me, specifically, when CFPUA's ASR well is being tested?
Sent the sampling schedule press release.
2) Can DEQ confirm that Chemours has, in fact, been operating the process that results in GenX as a
byproduct throughout the testing period? We've had a number of questions from folks wondering about
this since the company said it was an intermittent process and it would be great to put that to bed.
Chemours has indicated the process (the vinyl ether process) that results in GenX as a byproduct has
Teen ongoing throughout the testing sampling process. On June 23, DEQ requested operating
information to show when the process had been in production so we can compare that information to the
date when sampling occurred,
3) Has DEQ confirmed definitively that Chemours has ceased discharging GenX into the Cape Fear? When
did that actually occur? Does it include the other "novel" compounds? How is Chemours keeping the
wastewater from being discharged? Mike Johnson mentioned something about needing three tanker
trucks a day to handle it. is that what they're doing? Is that being hauled off for incineration? If so,
where? If not trucks, what is the process? Also, has DEQ visited to plant to inspect this process?
Chemours has told us it has stopped discharging what's known as GenX into the Cape Fear as of June
21. Chemours has indicated. it is keeping the wastewater from being discharged by using temporary
storage tanks to hold the waste as they are working on final out-of-state disposal options. Chemours
made one shipment to an Arkansas commercial incinerator on June 22 for a trial bum.
DEQ staff plan to visit Chemours this week to verify that Chemours is containing the wastewater
discharge from its vinyl ether process,
Our samples, which have been sent to the EPA lab — the same one Dr. Knappe used. in his study — will
be analyzed for other compounds included in the study report.
DEQ is working with EPA's Toxic Substance Control Act staff to gain access to information submitted

to the EPA thatwill help the state evaluate all manufacturing processes and potential chemicals that
need to be included in the NPDES permit renewal before the upcoming site visit.
Are those questions you can help me address?
