Air Quality: Notice for Sept. 4 public hearing on air permit for a proposed biomass -poultry litter energy facility at Prestage
Farms in Bladen County. Public notice is scheduled to be published in the Fayetteville Observer on July 30.

DENR events this week
July 29: The second of three brownfields agreements
that will bring —485 jobs and $235 million in est.
investment to Mecklenburg County. Officials with
DENR and the developer are scheduled to sign the
agreement for ReVenture -East July 29. Governor
McCrory, Secretary Skvarla and DENR leadership
hosted a press event in March when the first agreement
— this one for ReVenture-West — was signed. The entire
project represents what will become the region"s largest
eco-industrial park on a former Superfund site in
Charlotte. Also, much of the 330 acre tract will be set
aside for conservation purposes.
July 30, 2:30-4:30 p.m.: Funding Levels and Potential
Funding Sources Study Group of the N.C. Mining and Energy
Commission will meet in the 5"' floor conference room of the
Archdale Building in Raleigh.
July 30, 6 p.m.: DWR will hold a public hearing in Washington
on a permit Martin Marietta Materials needs to remove
water from its quarry in Vanceboro. The state agency
is seeking public feedback on a permit that would allow
Martin Marietta to remove up to 12 million gallons of water
a day from two aquifers in Beaufort County. Hearing
will be held at Beaufort County Community College.
July 30, 12:30 p.m.: Four advisory committees to the N.C.
Marine Fisheries Commission meet to discuss a petition for
rulemaking that proposes reclassifying most internal coastal
waters as secondary nursery areas. The meeting is at the New
Bern Riverfront Convention Center. The Finfish,
Shellfish/Crustacean, Habitat and Water Quality and Sea
Turtle advisory committees will be asked to review and
comment on whether the state should reclassify waters as
requested in a petition for rulemaking that asks the Marine
Fisheries Commission to adopt a rule that makes North
Carolina's internal coastal waters permanent secondary
nursery areas, unless they are currently designated as primary
nursery areas or special secondary nursery areas. The petition
states the primary effect of the proposed rule would be to halt
shrimp trawling in North Carolina inshore waters.
July 31, 2 p.m.: N.C. Science Advisory Board on Air Toxics
meets by conference call to discuss the limits for cadmium,
one of the state air toxics compounds. Staff members with the
Division of Air Quality provide administrative support to the
board, which advises the N.C. Environmental Management
Commission on acceptable air toxics limits from N.C.
industries.
July 31, 11 a.m.: DWM's Hazardous Waste
Section hosts a public hearing on permit modification
for Clean Harbors in Reidsville. The company
wants to modify its permit to add space to process
small containers of waste. The hearing will
be at the Reidsville Public Library.
Aug. 2, 5-9 p.m.: First Friday at the N.C. Museum
of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. "Jason and the
Argonauts" plus "Carolina Grasslands": Follow
Greek hero Jason as he leads a team of intrepid
adventurers in a perilous quest for the legendary
Golden Fleece — all brought. to life by the special
effects wizardry of Ray Harrvhausen — in "Jason
and the Argonauts." Plus fine art photography from
Lawrence Earley in the Nature Art Gallery. Movie
is Ca 7 p.m. in the museum's Main Auditorium.
Aug. 2: Staff from the Division of Water Quality
and Ecosystem Enhancement Program will be in
New Bern to film an episode of the nationally
syndicated television program, "Aqua Kids." The
episode will highlight the success of a newly
created stormwater wetland, which is the largest in
the state. The 30-minute episode will be broadcast
by stations nationwide. Aqua Kids, a children's
television program which educates youngsters on
the importance of protecting marine environments,
is broadcast on WTVD in the Triangle, WCNC in
Charlotte, WMYV in the Triad, and WHNS in
Asheville. More details to come on when it will air.
Aug. 3, 1030 a.m.-2 p.m.: N.C. Zoo hosts birthday
event for the two baby gorillas that are turning one-
year -old next month.
Public events involving senior leadership
July 31, 2:3 0 p.m.: DENR Secretary John
Skvarla presents Grover Nicholson with the Order
of the Longleaf Pine at a retirement party for
Nicholson in the Green Square Training Room on
first floor. Nicholson has most of his 32 years in
state govt. with DENR, the last 12 as DWM's
Underground Storage Tank section chief.
Looking Ahead
Aug. 5. 6-10 p.m.: DAQ hosts public hearing on a
revised air quality permit for a proposed cement
manufacturing plant in New Hanover County. Titan
America/Carolinas Cement Co. has applied to
modify its permit to operate a Portland cement
manufacturing plant in Castle Havne.
