Cooper today before our Community Forum on GenX happening TONIGHT at 6prn in Wilmington. The press has been invited. Local public officials have been invited to attend from New Hanover and Brunswick counties. If possible, here are the items we would like movement or before 5prn today: - We have strong concerns about D14HS's public health statement. We think their calculations were wrong. Our scientists in Wilmington spoke with DHHS on Monday and were not satisfied with DHHS's inability to clarify how the assessed the known risk. It is my understanding DHHS miscalculated the risk by a magnitude of three. Basically, DHHS is telling the public that GenX is 1000x safer to consume than any PFOA/PFOS. We take issue with that assessment. WE WANT THAT ROLLED BACK ASAP!! - To my knowledge we have not heard any public statements from Gov. Cooper on this entire issue and that is getting noted. If there has been one and we missed it, my apologies... information has been flowing quickly here. If no official statement has been made to date, we are concerned by that. DEQ-CFW-00078926 - In that public statement we'd like to know that the State is doing ALL it can to address this concern locally. Chemours released a public statement yesterday offering to voluntarily halt all discharge of GenX into our water supply. We have questions surrounding that. 1. How is Chemours going to capture, remove, and dispose of the wastewater containing GenX? 2. Sounds like this was a voluntary move on Chemours' part. Yet, the statement only specified Chemours and not Kuraray or any other facility at the Fayetteville Works site that has access to the discharge permit and pipes. Does this mean that there will be NO GenX discharged in any form or any amount from the facilities in the DuPont, Chemours, or Kuraray complex at any point in time from now on? Will Chemours be entering into a consent order to ensure this is the case? 3. How will Chemours ensure that the drinking water drawn from the Cape Fear River is safe in the future? What remediation steps will be imposed on them? Ultimately, we are asking for a better line of communication between our local stakeholders and the State officials to ensure greater transparency on this public health issue. Here is the press release for tonight's Community Forum. It outlines our speakers. I look forward to working with you on this issue. June 19, 2017 Chemours' private, closed door, meeting with government officials and CFPUA left everyone with more questions than answers. Cape Fear River Watch is assembling a panel of environmental and health stakeholders and professionals on Wednesday, June 21 from 6:OOPM - 8:OOPM at the Coastline Convention Center located in downtown Wilmington for a Community Forum to address public confusion and concern. The following professionals and educators have signed on to give public statements and answer questions regarding emergent contaminants in our shared water supply: 1.
