On half of Secretary Regan, thank you for your email about Chemours and GenX, and your concerns about your family.
Secretary Regan is reviewing all emails, as well as summaries of citizen phone calls, as part of his investigation into this
matter. I will do my best to address your questions and comments, but please understand that I may not be able to do
sofully atthis time.
This week, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) began collecting water samples to better understand current
conditions and take appropriate action. While there is a |ovv health risk associated with GenX, DE{Ihas strongly
encouraged Chemours to identify any measures that can be taken to reduce or eliminate the discharges of the chemical
to the Cape Fear River until the state completes its investigation. Additionally, DEQ also is pushing the Environmental
Protection Agency to provide regulatory guidance on GenX, which is an unregulated contaminant.
D8Qappreciates the diverse impacts this matter may have onthe greater Wilmington community. Aapart ofabroad
effort to keep citizens informed as we move forward, we will be launching vvebsitethis week to share information
about GenX. The page is not yet active but will be easily found from our landing page at
Again, thank you for contacting DEQabout this matter.

I am a professional water resources engineer, a citizen of Wilmington, NC, and a father of two young boys who
have been drinking tap water from the Sweeney WTP for their entire lives.
It is imperative that NCDEQ not reissue the Chemours NPDES permit unless something is done to address the
plant's discharge of GenX (PFPrOPrA). Please require them to monitor their discharge and levels of the
chemical upstream and downstream of their discharge. Please establish an MCL that NCDEQ can enforce, so
that Chemours will be compelled to do something.
I understand that the science has not been finalized on the health effects of GenX or the amount of GenX in my
family's drinking water. But this should not stop NCDEQ from taking decisive action. DuPont has a well
documented history with respect to this family of chemicals (PFCs) and waiting too long to address
environmental and health impacts. Please don't let this be yet another example of corporations and stockholders
taking precedence over the people that you and NCDEQ serve.
Respectfully,
David Lee
