PROJECT SUMMARY: The applicant- is proposing the placement of 2 dry hydrants for fire protection. *) C 6 Environmental setting The project which is being proposed by the Town of Washington Park is located at two separate sites both adjacent to Maple Creek which is a tributary of Runyon Creek, a tributary of the Pamlico River. Both sites are also north of NC 32 which is locally known as River Road. Maple Creek runs approximately parallel to River Road at the two locations. Site no. 1 (Rogers) is just upstream from the confluence of Maple Creek and Runyon Creek. At this location Maple Creek has a width of ± 40' and a center depth of ± 4' at normal water. At this location the north side of the creek is bordered by a wooded swamp. On the south side (project side), the creek is bordered by a mixture of upland grasses and various wetland sedges.and remnant cypress knees. This area appears to have once been a wetland area which has been historically filled. Site no. 2 (Langley) is upstream of site no. 1 and is located within a grass parking lot of Shop Eze Hardware adjacent to NC 32 and SR 1303. At this location Maple Creek has a width of ± 25' and a depth of i 4' at normal water. Also at this location the creek has been channelized; therefore, it has the appearance of a ditch. Both sides of the creek are bordered by upland vines and grasses. Project proposal The applicant is proposing to place two dry.hydrants which will be used for fire protection adjacent to Maple Creek. Within the past year, the town placed two other hydrants in the Pamlico River. The two Maple Creek hydrants will serve the same purpose as the Pamlico River hydrants. At site 1 the hydrant will be placed ± 25' landward of the normal water level of Maple Creek. The 6" intake pipe will extend ± 51 into the creek and will lay on the creek bottom. No excavation will be conducted in the creek except for that necessary for proper sloping where the pipe enters the creek at the normal water level. The trench in which the pipe will be laid on land will be backfilled with materials which were excavated from the trench; then the area will be restored to its original contour. At site 2 the hydrant will be placed ± 12' landward of the normal water level of Maple Creek. The 6" intake pipe will extend ± 5' into the creek and will lay on the creek bottom. As with site 1, no excavation will be conducted in the creek except for that necessary for proper sloping where the pipe enters the creek at the normal water level. Again, the trench in which the pipe will be laid on land will be backfilled with materials which were excavated from the trench; then the area will be restored to its original contour. Environmental impacts The project as proposed should have minimal environmental impacts. Some short term turbidity will exist when the trench is excavated at the point where the pipe enters Maple Creek. David L. Gossett - Washington Office - 18 December 1991 Please type or print.
