The dike around the Hegge impoundment (formerly Kitchen Impoundment) needs to be repaired. These repairs are necessary due to nutria burrowing activity and erosion due to wave action at full pool for past few years. Approximately 28 locations, 0.06 acres, have been identified as needing repair due to nutria damage. These locations will be repaired by digging up the known hole/burrow locations with an excavator and immediately replacing the material in the same location and compacting to maintain dike integrity. Additionally, 3 areas, 68.3 meters of the 3,550 meter dike, have been identified as needing repair due to excessive wave induced erosion. To repair the eroded dike, once the water levels are brought down to marsh elevation to expose the eroded material, the material used to originally construct the dike will be repositioned with an excavator to provide an approximate 3:1 slope to restore the dike to its original condition. Approximately 0.05 acres of dike will be disturbed during this repair portion of the project. If something is missing or you have any questions please contact me at 252-429-3100 x26. Describe the existing conditions on the site and the general land use in the vicinity of the project at the time of this application: The project area consists of a 105 acre impounded wetland. This impoundment is enclosed on all sides by an existing dike which runs 3,550 meters in length. Water levels in the impoundment are managed using 5 existing water control structures and an electrical 30" pumping station. 3b. Describe the overall project in detail, including the type of equipment to be used: This project will repair damage caused by nutria to the dike surrounding the Hegge impoundment at approximately 28 locations. Additionally, 3 areas of dike (68.3 meters total) eroded by wave action on the impoundment side of the dike will be repaired to it original condition. Prior to any repair the impoundment will be drawn down to marsh elevation to expose the areas in need of repair. The nutia damaged locations will be repaired by digging the known hole/burrow locations up with an excavator and immediately replacing the material in the same location and compacting to maintain dike integrity. Appoximately 0.06 acres of the dike will be disturbed during this repair. To repair the eroded dike, once the water levels are brought down to marsh elevation to expose the eroded material, the material used to originally construct the dike will be repositioned with an excavator to provide an approximate 3:1 slope to restore the dike to its original condition.
