Please find below the updates requested in the October 12, 2018 letter from Toby Vinson related to the Anticipate Bypass Approvals granted to Martin Marietta for the discharge of Hurricane Florence flood waters from several quarries. Belgrade Quarry (NPDES Permit NCG020005) Pumping continues at Belgrade Quarry. As of December 1, 2018, an estimated 930 million gallons of water have been pumped from the flooded pit. In mid -November, a setback occurred when the White Oak River rose and began flowing back into the quarry via the southern breach. As a result, the volume of water in the pit is estimated to be 3.3 billion gallons, 120 million gallons less than the original volume. At this time, bypass of normal treatment systems is anticipated to continue for several months. In addition to the bypass pumping by way of supplemental pumps (which will continue), pumping utilizing our normal pumps is expected to resume in December and this water will be directed through the treatment system. Castle Hayne Quarry (NPDES Permit NCG020010) Pumping continues at Castle Hayne Quarry. Discharge has resumed through the normal discharge system. However, the Northeast Cape Fear River has remained at or above flood stage for an extended period of time which has limited our ability to discharge. As river levels decrease, bypass pumping will again be utilized. As of December 1, 2018, an estimated 380 million gallons of water have been pumped from the flooded pit. Rocky Point Quarry (NPDES Permit NCG020166) Pumping continues at Rocky Point Quarry. Due to significant damage to the pumps, pumping has occurred below typical levels. Discharge is through the normal discharge system. Bi-monthly updates will continue for these quarries until normal water levels are observed.
