Department of Transportation and the City of Greensboro propose to widen U.S. 220 (Battleground Avenue) from north of Westridge Road to the eastbound I-840 ramps in Greensboro. The existing roadway will be upgraded to a six-lane, median-divided road with a 5-foot wide sidewalk on both sides. Traditional intersections are proposed at New Garden Road, Brassfield Road, and Cotswold Avenue. Additional median breaks are proposed to allow left-turns at several other intersections. The purposes of the project are to address congestion now and through 2040, and to improve safety along Battleground Avenue. Widening the road will improve mobility along the corridor and is consistent with previous City transportation plans and the Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Comprehensive Transportation Plan (June 2010). ;., ,a; 1,,:r ' ::«u,se ,N,atioiiai ii;tar.yPa" rk • Traffic operations are expected to continue to worsen as trafFicvolumes increase and improvements are needed to accommodate these increases. • Past crash rates are higher than statewide average crash rates for similar roads (576.13 vs. 341.85 crashes per million vehicle miles traveled). Safety is a high priority for the City of Greensboro as part of their Vision Zero strategy. A median reduces potential conflicts between vehides. • The Future I-840 Loop (NCDOT Project U-2524C) is under construction. The interchange with U.S. 220 is anticipated to be open by early 2019. • Project U-5306B will improve the U.S. 220/Westridge Road intersection. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2019. • The City of Greensboro proposes to add a roundabout at the intersection of Cotswold Terrace and Old Battleground Avenue. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2019. November 13, 2018 Page 2 Widening of U.S. 220 (Project No. U-5892) From Westridge Road to the Eastbound I-840 Ramps The purpose of this public meeting is to provide information on the project and gather input from the public.
