This is a below -grade, MBBR type system with the ability to feed supplemental carbon for BNR enhancement. Influent wastewater enters the system at the septic/solids storage tank where solids can accumulate for removal, wastewater is transferred by an intermediate pump station to the equalization chamber. From the equalization chamber the influent moves through the pre -anoxic chamber, the aerobic MBBR and then to the post -anoxic chamber. Wastewater and mixed liquor within the system can be recycled to improve nitrate removal rates as it passes through the pre -anoxic chamber. Instrumentation including in -line ORP probes provide feedback for operational changes and supplemental carbon addition. Effluent moves from the secondary clarifier chamber, through filter cartridges into UV disinfection and is then dosed to one of two infiltration basins. A review of 12 month calculated average NDMR data back to September 2016 indicates no significant compliance issues, there are 3 monthly exceedances of Total Nitrogen related to poor BNR performance. (if no, note below.) 0 ❑ ❑ ❑ Comment: This site use a dual train activated sludae system with loose media within the are -anoxic. oxic and post -anoxic chambers typical of any IFAS (Integrated fixed -film activated sludge) or MBBR (moving bed biofilm reactor) system. The media present within the bio-chambers enable the system to achieve an increase in biomass without having to manage dense mixed liquor levels or deal with problems associated with older sludge ages. Typically, nutrient conversion and removal rates are very efficient with these systems. This system experienced operational issues during the start-up phase due to low hydraulic and organic loading rates as it serves only one large commercial building with medical and offices spaces. The ORC has been able to optimize operations by increasing supplemental carbon feeds into both the anoxic chambers to enhance denitrification rates and into the aeration chamber (reactor) to increase system biomass and to date, this systems' operational reliability has improved. Treatment Influent Pump Station Yes No NA NE Is the pump station free of bypass lines or structures? 0 ❑ ❑ ❑ Is the general housekeeping acceptable? ❑ ❑ ❑ Are all pumps present? ❑ ❑ ❑ Are all pumps operable? ❑ ❑ ❑ Are floats/controls operable? ❑ ❑ ❑ Are audio and visual alarms available? ❑ ❑ ❑ Are audio and visual alarms operational? ❑ ❑ ❑ # Are SCADA/Telemetry alarms required? ❑ ❑ ❑ Are SCADA/Telemetry available? ❑ ❑ ❑ Are SCADA/Telemetry operational? 0 ❑ ❑ ❑ Comment: The high level alarm was tested during the inspection and the audible and visual alrms functioned as designed. The auto -dialer also functioned properly and called the ORC's mobile phone. Flow rates are recorded on a reading sheet and combined to calculate effluent volumes. Flow rates are typically 4,000 to 6,500 gallons per day when the building is occupied. Standby Power Yes No NA NE Is automatically activated standby power available? ❑ ❑ ❑ Is generator tested weekly by interrupting primary power source? ❑ ❑ ❑ Is generator operable? ❑ ❑ ❑ Does generator have adequate fuel? 0 ❑ ❑ ❑ Comment: No comment Treatment Barscreen Yes No NA NE Is it free of excessive debris? ❑ ❑ ❑ Is disposal of screenings in compliance? ❑ ❑ ❑ Are the bars spaced properly? ❑ ❑ ❑ Is the unit in good condition? ❑ ❑ ❑ Comment: No comment Treatment Activated Sludge Yes No NA NE Is the aeration mechanism operable? ❑ ❑ ❑ Is the aeration basin thoroughly mixed? ❑ ❑ ❑ Page: 4 Permit: WQ0036766 Owner - Facility: Old North State Water Company LLC Inspection Date: 09/06/2018 Inspection Type : Compliance Evaluation Reason for Visit: Routine Is the aeration equipment easily accessed? ❑ ❑ ❑ Is Dissolved Oxygen adequate? ❑ ❑ ❑ Are Settleometer results acceptable? ❑ ❑ ❑ Is activated sludge an acceptable color? ❑ ❑ 0 ❑ Comment: This treatment process uses a MBBR process for efficiency in both BOD and nutrient removal rates. The anoxic and oxic chambers are visible only through a series of manholes as the chambers are below grade. Supplemental carbon (MlcroC®) is added as needed bV chemical feed pump to augment BOD levels to improve biomass growth and to enhance denitrification rates. Liquid alum is also added to co -precipitate phosphorous within the biomass.
