Cove Bridge Project – Lake James
Burke County
Potential Percussive Activities
The construction of the pedestrian bridge over Lake James has the potential to generate some
percussive activities in the form of pile driving. Construction of the two-end bends will require
the driving of 6 H-piles, 3 in each end bent. The driving of these piles would take approximately
2-3 days. Noise generated from the pile hammer could potentially impact nearby roosting
habitat of the Northern long-eared bat. There are multiple occurrence records for this species
within 15-miles of the project site; however, no known maternity roosts are located within 150-
feet of the project site and no known hibernacula sites are within ¼ mile of the project site;
therefore, a “not likely to adversely affect” determination is warranted for northern long-eared
bat (personnel communication with Bryan Tompkins, USFWS on 10-11-18).
