8. Project Summary The applicant proposes to install a 3" force main along the
south side of Old Military Road across a man-made canal connected to the A.W.W.
New Hanover County Engineering
Page 2
9. Project Description
The proposed site is located off of SR 1421 (Greenville Loop Road) on SR 1602
(Old Military Road) New Hanover County. A collection system will be installed
to serve the residential units within the Cedar Island. A man-made canal/basin
that connect to the AIWW crosses under th road. This feature is irregular in
shape and measures approximately 30' in width (canal side) to 80' in width
(basin) with a total length of approximately 800'. There are approximately 10
small pier/floating dock in the basin area. The width of the wetlands in the
area is approximately 4' to 6' consisting mostly of pockets of Juncus
roemerianus marsh, also very small fringes of Spartina alterniflora. The
waters in this area are classified as SA, primary nursery and are open to the
taking of shellfish.
The pipeline (force main) will be installed in a 3' wide by l' deep trench
along the length of the Causeway on the south side. The trench will be used as
a sediment trap. It will be close to existing grade following completion of
the installation. All excess material will be removed to high ground. The
force main will be suspended from the small existing bridge crossing over to
Cedar Island. Proper present plans shows a pipeline crossing with two pile
bents. The pipe is now shown below the bottom elevation of the bridge.
10. Anticipated Impacts
There is no navigation under the bridge to the waters of the A.I.W.W. The pipe
installation should be at the same elevation as the bottom of the bridge.
Provided that all pre-project elevations are re-established no significant
adverse impacts are anticipated from the ditch. Due to the nursery area
classification, the trench should be further protected from sedimentation/
siltation by the installation of silt fencing.
