Hamilton, Executive Director MEMORANDUM TO: Ann Duncan, Lake Management, Duke Power Company Dennis Whitaker, Lake Management, Duke Power Company FROM: Ron Linville, Regional Coordinator -Habitat Conservation Program North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission DATE: May 26, 2006 SUBJECT: David Woldman (356 cubic yards), Lots 9 & 10, Upper Lake Place, Iredell County This correspondence is in response to the referenced dredging applications on Lake Norman. The activities are to provide additional water depth for boating activities. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is authorized to comment and make recommendations which relate to the impacts of these projects on fish and wildlife through the Federal License of Water Resource Project Act (Federal Power Act-16 U.S.C. 791a et seq.), and the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act (48 Stat. 401, as amended; 16 U.S.C. 661-667d). Based on our review of the documents submitted and site location information provided, we have no objection to the projects as the dredging sites are identified as acceptable for these types of activities on Duke Power Company's "Critical Habitat Inventory" maps. Activities should not be accomplished close to undeveloped buffers and undisturbed submerged areas as this practice could create secondary habitat impacts or cause shoreline erosion. Unless suction dredging is utilized, activities should be accomplished in the dry or during low lake levels. The NCWRC encourages Fish-Friendly Piers and establishment or protection of shoreline vegetation for enhanced shoreline habitats and erosion control. Any nearby environmental areas should not be directly or indirectly impacted by the projects.
