8. PROJECT SUMMARY: The applicant proposes to relocate existing private docking facility to
accommodate a larger vessel.
Darrin Eakins
Page 2
9. PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project site is located at 24 Island Dr., adjacent to Mott's Channel on Harbor Island, between the
Atlantic Ocean and Greenville Sound. The site is located in the Wrightsville Beach Township in New
Hanover County. The lot is approximately 0.16 acres with 135' of shoreline frontage, which is stabilized
by a bulkhead. The lot averages 6' above mean sea level. The applicant maintains a three story single-
family residence on the property with vegetation consisting of lawn grasses and ornamental landscaping.
There are currently no existing coastal wetlands at this property. Extended into Mott's Channel is an
existing private pier (42' x 6'), which terminates into a gazebo (12'x 12') and a sundeck (12' x 7'). An
access ramp then leads into a "U-shaped" floating dock configuration (25' x 6', 13' x 4', and 25' x ~').
One boatlift is located within the middle of the "U-shaped" configuration and another boatlift is located
on the northern side of configuration. All structures are within the established Wrightsville Beach
Pierhead Line and outside the 15' riparian corridor setback requirements. The existing structures
currently provides docking space for four (4) vessels.
The Wrightsville Beach Land Use Plan classifies adjacent waters as Conservation, and the adjacent high
ground portion of the project area as Developed .The waters of the Mott's Channel, which are included
in the Wrightsville Recreational Area, are classified SB# by the Division of Water Quality. They are
NOT designated as a Primary Nursery Area by the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries and they are
CLOSED to the harvest of shellfish.
PROPOSED PROJECT:
The applicant proposes to relocate existing docking facility to accommodate a larger vessel. The
proposed relocation of the docking facility would place the existing "U-shaped" floating configuration
approximately 10' to the south. The existing boatlift on the northern side of the configuration would be
removed and four new mooring pilings would be installed approximately 16~ to the north of the new
northern floating dock location. These mooring pilings would be spaced approximately 20' apart to
accommodate a larger vessel. The proposed stricture would continue to provide docking space for four
(4) vessels.
10. ANTICIPATED IMPACTS:
The relocation of the "U-shaped" floating dock would continue to incorporate 327 sq. ft of Public Trust
and Estuarine Waters. Minor increases in turbidity should be expected during the construction phase of
the project, however, turbidity levels should return to normal once the project is complete. As proposed,
the applicant's proposal would not interfere with navigation. The relocated dock would not create any
additional slips for vessel dockage. All structures are within the established Wrightsville Beach
Pierhead Line and outside the 15' riparian corridor setback requirements.
