I am writing to you concerning the Raleigh City Council's Project U-5826 to widen Falls of the

Council's objective is to facilitate the intensely Irigh traffic flow from Wake Forest and
Wakefield along Falls of the Neuse Rd. to I-540. The City Council vate is imminent. It is the
hope of the vast majprity of homeowners. along this corridor.that Project U-5826 be stopped.
Ve're hopeful that the N D n wi11 inves igate his proposal as it pe ain to he tate
Environmentai Policy Act I-fomecnets are concemed over two issues: water quaiity and air
quality. Widening FON between I-540 and the Neuse River cuts through and threatens the Falls
Lake Watershed. Construction will directly abut the filtration facility on FON that pmvides
clean drinking rvaker to Raleigh & Wake County residents. Across the road is a retired Wake
County landfill. Widening FON wili also compromise the sepdc systems of many homes along
the roadway -- homes that are in the supposedly protected Fails i.ake Watershed. 'iris is no
longer a localized issue. It could impact the better part of Wake County. There is also the issue
of air quality. A 6-lane Falls of the Neuse Road will surely cause increased air pollution in what
is currentty a.grdominately residential area.
$ea Upshaw of t6e DQT coufirmed through an emaii to a N. Rateigh su6division
homeowner that the NC DOT never cond ctPd an enviro ment I impacf Sh1dy on how wi
FQN could affect aleigh drikine water Water runoff from Falls of Neuse Road already spills
into Barton's Creek which flows to the Fa1ls Lake. We can only imagine the ad,verse impact
should the Raleigh City Council approve the proposal to widen FON to six lanes. It is unknown
whetheran air qualiiy impact study was ever conciueEed.
It is troubling that a nearby homeowner was refused permission to widen his driveway because
nf khe deleterius ef.fect4 to the Falis LakQ watershed roteotinn area (Rale.igh's main water
supply), yet the State DOT and the City of Raleigh are on the verge of passing legisiation that
wiii rio exaLty-tltat: euvixaanxetthKiiy thrcateu t(re wars${and pussbly eazuerbate air
pollution) without having conducted proper impact due-diligence? We homeowners and small
businesses along the FON corridor have tried everything in our limited power to get the City
Council to consider another option. Qnr pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
We're ltuping ihat t1e AiC DEQ wiil cxrk ir,ta tkis ceaUer as quick#y es sibi. Tt Ciiy
Council vote is imminent.
