We have added some shoulder berm gutter, as well as some base ditches to this project trying to be good stewards of the environment. Some of the base ditches have been widened to help reduce velocities. This project also has a preform scour hole that has been place at the outlet of an outfall pipe to prevent the pollutants from entering a near by creek. The additional 8' of grassed shoulder will facilitate the removal of pollutants from the proposed roadway. SH A Hazardous Spill Basin has not been designed for this project for the following reasons. NC 274 in this section of roaway is classified as a collector, not an arterial. The traffic volumes are low, project to be only 3,600 vpd in the design year of 2038. The truck percentage for this project is 2%. Once the project is complete, the geometry will improved greatly, reducing the likelyhood of accidents. The distance to the WSII area is 0.4 miles which is only 500 feet from being outside the requirement for a roadway with a much higher classification.
