SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW
Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions:
TRC Environmental Corporation (TRC) conducted an archaeological survey and evaluation for the
proposed replacement of Bridge No. 244 on SR 1114 (Shope Road) over North Fork Coweeta Creek in
Macon County in May 2016. A"No National Register of Historic Places Eligible or Listed Archaeological
Sites Present" form submitted on July 15, 2016 (Nelson 2016). This PA is being revised to reflect a change
in the APE boundary. The APE has expanded by 75 feet (22.86 m) to the north and south due to the
proposed construction for a temporary on-site detour to the south. The project is located in southern Macon
County and plotted in the eastern portion of the Prentiss USGS 7.5' topographic quadrangle (Figure 1). The
previous background check identified no archaeological resources within the APE.
Previous Fieldwork Results
The archaeological field survey included shovel test placements (STPs) at 10- to 15-m intervals along a
single transect in the northwest (STPs #101-105) and northeast (STPs #106-108) quadrants within the
APE; a shovel test (#109) was also excavated in a portion of the southwest quadrant and another (STP
#110) in the southeast (Figure 2). The northwest quadrant contains a small cleared power line cut at the
base of a roadside bank. The eastern end of the northeast quadrant contains hydric soils and standing
water, as does the southeast quadrant, which also contains the North Fork of Coweeta Creek, while the
southwest quadrant is primarily steep slope. No shovel testing occurred in areas with standing water or
steep slope.
All shovel tests measured 30 cm in diameter and were excavated to subsoil or hydric soils or a minimum
depth of 75 cm below surface (cmbs). All soils that were not obvious fill were dry-screened through'/4-
inch mesh. Standard techniques were used to describe each shovel test in terms of depth, stratigraphy, and
artifact recovery.
One shovel test (#101) contained roadside fill; four shovel tests (#106-108) encountered hydric soils at
depths of 19 to 27 cmbs. Shovel tests 102-105 were excavated in the northwest quadrant along the utiliry
line cut; soils in that area consisted of a plowzone of dark brown (lOYR 3/3) loam to sandy clay loam
extending to approximate depths of 22 to 38 cmbs, and overlying dark yellowish brown (lOYR 4/4) sandy
clay with rocks at depths of 34 to 60 cmbs. Two shovel tests (#104 and 105) ended on wet grayish brown
(lOYR 5/2) sand at 65 to 75 cmbs.
No cultural artifacts were found in any shovel tests and no above ground cultural features were noted
within the APE.
Recommendations
No further archeological investigations are required for the expanded Bridge 244 APE in Macon County.
Previous subsurface tests and field observations determined that the level landform adjacent to the stream
consists of hydric soils or standing water, while the landform in the southwest quadrant is steeply sloped.
The power line corridor, which is dry, was tested yielding negative results. It is not likely that additional
testing would provide any new information. As a result, no signiiicant or eligible archaeological resources
are expected due to undesirable conditions (persistent wemess ar steep slope in excess of 15 percent) for
early settlement activities. Furthermore, the previous background check identiiied no archaeological sites
within the project limits. The results of the former "No National Register of Historic Places Eligible or
Listed Archaeological Sites Present" form dated July 15, 2016, are still valid. If design plans change again
to impact areas outside of the archaeological APE, then further archaeological work might be necessary.
