NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED WASTE
This advertisement and a news release have been issued in compliance with North
Carolina General Statute 143-215.1C (a portion of the Clean Water Act of 1999). The
below information was sent to news reporters on September 5, 2018. Charlotte Water
crews responded to a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) on September 4, 2018 near 3900
Billy Graham Parkway. An estimated 2,658,000 gallons reached Taggart Creek in the
Catawba River Watershed. The overflow was caused by a fallen tree breaking a
wastewater pipe. Crews quickly found the overflow and began pumping wastewater
around the broken pipe to stop the discharge into the creek. Charlotte Water crews
maintain more than 4,200 miles of wastewater pipe. Charges from monthly water bills
fund preventative maintenance, emergency response, and the safe daily delivery of
more than 82 million gallons of wastewater to five treatment plants, where wastewater is
treated to high water quality standards and released back into our waterways. If you see
