Subject: NCDOT - Ferry Division - Fort Fisher Dredging Notification
Mr. Lane,
The NCDOT— Ferry Division is notifying you of our upcoming dredging operations at the
Fort Fisher Ferry Terminal. Shoaling in the channel and basin have become a concern for
the ferries traveling back and forth and also a concern for the traveling public's safety.
The ferries need a clear and wide channel to safely make the multiple daily trips back
and forth from Fort Fisher to Southport. Our most recent survey of this area was done
on September 4, 2018 and shows that 171,451 cubic yards needs to be removed from
the channel to meet the current permitted depth of 14 feet. All work will be completed
by the NCDOT Ferry Division Marine Maintenance crew who operates the state owned
hydraulic pipeline "Dredge Manteo". All material removed from the Fort Fisher basin
and channel will be pumped into the adjacent spoil site. NCDOT utilizes this upland spoil
site under a license (License No. DACA21-3-13-4099) granted by the Department of
Army — Savannah District — Corps of Engineers. A capacity survey of this spoil site was
recently completed by the NCDOT Locations and Surveys Unit. They determined there
was 199,749 cubic yards of space available for material. Due to sturgeon and turtle
moratoriums dredging activities will not begin until November 15t", 2018.
Per conditions of CAMA Major Permit #561 we are informing you of the following
information:
A) Original dredge and fill permit— CAMA Major #561
B) No dimensional changes are proposed
C) Please see attached plans and surveys
D) Please see attached plans and surveys.
An E-PCN will be submitted for the Department of Water Quality and USACE.
If you need any additional information please let me know.
Thank you,
Catherine Peele
