Lawrence Eaton -ec x Subject: Summary of Stream Calls on March 27, 2007 of Upstream, Adjacent, and Downstream of Adcock's Nursery, Off of Sunset Lake Road, Fuquay-Varina, Wake County, NC. DWQ Reference Enforcement Case # SS-2006-0007. This memo is to summarize my findings concerning the permanence of the Unnamed Tributary to Middle Creek upstream and downstream of Adcock's Nursery. These stream permanence calls were made on March 27, 2007 and used the method outlined in the document Identification Methods for the Origins of Intermittent and Perennial Streams (version 3.1), which can be found at http://h2o.enr.state.nc.us/ncwetlands/documents/NC Stream ID Manual. df To summarize this manual, a stream is permanent when 1) fish, crayfish, salamanders, fingernail clams, or large (Ranid) tadpoles are found OR 2) Thirty points or greater are scored on the stream form OR 3) More than one late instar individual of the following groups are collected: Mayflies, Caddisflies, winter Stoneflies, Odonates (dragon and damselflies), Dobsonflies, mussels, non-physid snails and riffle beetles. Site 1. This site was just upstream of a beaver pond in an area where the highly braided channel coalesced into mostly a single channel with a small amount of flow. The approximately 30 feet of stream assessed at this location scored 27 points, which would rate this section as intermittent and subject to the buffer rules. Macroinvertebrates collected at this site were primarily Amphipods (Crangonyx), but I also found a small salamander, three winter stoneflies (Allocapnia), three small caddisflies (Lepidostoma), three fingernail clams (Pisidium) plus worms and midges. Since none of these potential indicator taxa (salamander and caddisflies) were mature enough to be more than 6 months old, I felt that they were not indicative of perennial flow and concurred that the stream at this point was intermittent. See attached photos. Site 2. This site was below the remaining beaver dams, but above the Adcock's Nursery site. The nearly 50 foot section of stream evaluated at this site scored 30 points, indicating that it was perennial before entering Adcock property. Biological sampling at three points in this area found fish (bluegill - Lepomis macrochirus) at the first two points, a late instar mayfly (Centroptilum) at the second point and more than one dozen Ranid tadpoles and two dragonflies at the third point. Since many perennial indicator taxa were present at this site, the biology supports the stream form assessment of a perennial stream. See attached photos. Site 3. This site was downstream of the Adcock's Nursery property in a three foot wide incised channel with gravel riffles. The stream scored 39 points here, easily perennial. Sampling a two square foot section of the gravel riffle yielded over three-dozen late instar hydropsychid caddisflies (Cheumatopsyche and Hydropsyche) and a riffle beetle (Stenelmis) as well as midges and worms. Since hydropsychid caddisflies are indicative of not only permanent water, but permanent flow, the biology appears to agree with the forms assessment that this segment of stream is perennial.
