RE: Orr Road Extension Project
Orr Road and North Tryon Street, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina
CWS Project No. 2014-3280:2
Dear Ms. Harjuniemi:
Thank you for the opportunity to provide information from the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program
(NCNHP) database for the proposed project referenced above. The NCNHP database does not show any
records for rare species, important natural communities, natural areas, or conservation/managed areas
within the proposed project area based on the maps and Geographic Information System (GIS) data
submitted with your request for information.
Within one mile of the proposed project area, the NCNHP database shows element occurrence records
for the following rare species:
ELEMENT
OCCURRENCE STATE FEDERAL
SCIENTIFIC NAME COMMON NAME STATUS* ACCURACY STATUS* STATUS*
Delphinium exaltatum Tall Larkspur Historical Very Low E FSC
* For status definitions, please see the Definitions document at http://www.ncnhp.or/web/nhp/database-search.
The occurrence record for Tall Larkspur has low accuracy due to the lack of site-specific locational
information associated with this record, but this species has been documented from the Charlotte area.
In addition, the NCNHP database shows several properties considered to be Mecklenburg County open
space within one mile of the project area, the closest of which are Hidden Valley Neighborhood Park (ca.
0.3 miles west of the project), and the Eastway and Briarwood Community Parks ca. 0.4 miles and 0.5
miles south of the project area, respectively.
Please note that although the NCNHP database may not show records for rare species within the
proposed project area, it does not necessarily mean that they are not present; it may simply mean that
the area has not been surveyed. Occurrences of rare species documented within one mile of the
proposed project area increase the likelihood that these species may be present within the project area
if suitable habitat exists. The use of Natural Heritage Program data should not be substituted for actual
field surveys if needed, particularly if the project area contains suitable habitat for rare species.
