Subject: NC 53 (Western Boulevard) from SR 1308 (Gum Branch Road) to US 17 (Marine
Boulevard)
Onslow County
The North Carolina Department of Transportation Division 3 has begun studying the proposed
improvements to NC 53 (Western Boulevard) in Onslow County. The project is included in the 2018-2027
North Carolina State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). Right of way acquisition is scheduled
for Fiscal Year 2025.
The proposed project involves replacing the existing median with a raised median and adding and additional
through lane in each direction. The project will require acquisition of additional right of way.
We would appreciate any information you might have that would be helpful in evaluating potential
environmental impacts of the project. If applicable, please identify any permits or approvals which may be
required by your agency. Your comments will be used in the preparation of a Minimum Criteria
Determination Checklist. This document will be prepared in accordance with the State Environmental
Policy Act. It is desirable that your agency respond by September 1, 2018 so that your comments can be
used in the preparation of this document.
