Dear Mr. Riddle:
Reference is made to the Corps' letter of June 27, 2018, which provided comments and
request for additional information for the Western Carolina University (WCU) WCU 2014
Master Plan Improvements Project in Cullowhee, Jackson County, North Carolina. This letter is
requesting additional information related to item 3 of the June 27 letter.
Based on recent conversations with the N.C. State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO),
the Corps is revaluating our permit area for National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section
106 review for the intermural field improvements portion of the project. The Corps is requesting
the following information in order to ensure reasonable and sound efforts have been made in
establishing the Corps' permit area for Section 106 review.
1. Submit a grading plan for the intermural field improvements. This plan needs to
note all areas to be filled and any areas which will be cut or excavated.
2. Submit a figure noting equipment work areas and access corridors for the intermural
field improvements project area.
3. Submit Section 6 (Results -STEM Site Fieldwork) and Section 8 (Summary and
Recommendations) of the Archeological Survey and Testing for the Proposed
Western Carolina University STEMBuilding Project, revised draft report, May
2017, by TRC Environmental Corporation.
Please provide this information by September 10, 2018. Do note this revaluation may
change the Corps' permit area for NHPA Section 106 review for the intermural field

improvements. Therefore, the area for the requested comprehensive archeological survey may
change. If you have any questions please contact me.
