No. 0416 17.BP.8.R.76 Federal Permit Required? County: Randolph Document: ATTACHMENT G Funding: State ❑ Federal Yes ❑ No Permit Type: NWP 3 Project Description: This undertaking involves replacing Bridge No. 0416 with a new structure at existing location over Dale Creek along Asheland Street (SR 1911). The project's Area of Potential Effects includes 75 ft to either side of the bridge for a length under 450 ft. An offsite detour is available under five miles. The entire APE is to be considered for archaeological assessment with an empasis on the current alignment and reasonable construction easements. SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions: Aerial mapping and topography of this rural location was examined. A Google-based virtual driveby was available showing paving for a church parking lot apparently within the proposed ROW and utility wastewater "beehive" close to the bridge. Records at the Office of State Archaeology (OSA) were reviewed in September 2013. USGS quadrangle mapping depicting previously reviewed areas and site locations was copied. No previously documented archaeological sites were noted, nor were there any environmental reviews in the immediate area. For this project, much of the APE has been modified by the existing bridge construction, adjacent parking lot and utility easements. Expectations that an intact or otherwise significant archaeological resource might be impacted are low for this replace in place project. Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE: This bridge (No. 0416) replacement involves constructing a new structure on existing location. The road and bridge location and natural soils have already been disturbed by the construction of the existing bridge (circa 1960), SR 1911, parking lots and utilities. The majority of the very small APE has been modified which minimizes the preservation of intact archaeological contexts. There are no known archaeological resources documented with the OSA at this location. For these reasons on a small project, likelihood that significant, intact archaeological horizons or features will be affected is low. During replacement of the existing bridge, a detour is available.
