I met with Darhyl Boone (Town Manager), Jason Riddle (Collection System Worker), and Robert Sam (ORC). Mr. Sam is retired and Mr. Riddle has taken over the collection system duties. Mr. Riddle is currently keeping all records for collection system work in his WWTP ORC log book. He needs to keep separate records for collection system activities. I recommend using his predecessor's format of record keeping until Jason is able to format his own system. Overall it appears that Mars Hill is taking proactive steps to maintain their collection system for the long term, and that necessary day-to-day duties are being performed. The town has smoke and dye tested sewer lines to find sources of I&I in the system. They then repaired and/or replaced several lines that were discovered to be leaking and eliminated stormflows that were piped to the sanitary sewer. Robert said that probably 50kgal of I&I had been eliminated from significant rain event flows. This is significant considering the monthly average flow for the WWTP appears to be in the 150kgpd-200kgpd range. Mr. Boone said that they are planning to have engineers re-evaluate all of the pump stations this year for needed upgrades or repairs. The most significant current difficulty that the town is having with their collection system is rags clogging the pumps at the Crossroads Pump Station. They have installed a screen to catch rags but some are still getting through. The main source of the rags is believed to be a nursing home. The town is working with engineers to create a solution through either additional screening or pump replacement. The capital improvement plan will need to be updated quite soon as it ends in 2019.
