This report covers the period of time between 7/1/00 and 6/30/01. The Pittsboro plant is permitted to treat up to 750,000 gallons per day of wastewater. The collection system consists of an estimated 12 miles of sewer mains. The plant serves approximately eight hundred eighty one (88 1) residential and commercial customers. The Town of Pittsboro also has a State of North Carolina Approved Pretreatment program with two (2) permits issued at this time.. One (1) permit is issued to Hydro Tube South and the other permit is held by Townsends Food, lnc. Wastewater enters the plant and flows through a structure known as a bar screen, which catches large objects. The waste stream then enters a wetwell where it is pumped into two (2) aeration basins, which help to raise the dissolved oxygen content in the water. Through use of an activated sludge process, the biochemical oxygen demand and other parameters are treated with the activat- ed sludge then this treated water enters advanced treatment by going through sand filtration and then UV disinfection to meet the limits of our Discharge permit issued by the State of North Carolina. The treated wastewater is discharged into Roberson Creek which then flows into Jordan Lake. The operator -in -responsible charge (ORC) of the Pittsboro Wastewater Treatment Plant is James Jenkins, and he can be reached at the following number: 542-5833. PERFORMANCE: The Pittsboro Treatment Plant (NPDES Permit #NCt)020354):has performed well for the past year`.`Ove the past two years the Town Of Pittsboro has spent a large amount of money repairing and replacing process equipment. However, there is one permit violation that mars an otherwise spotless record. April, 2001: The Pittsboro WWPT exceeded a monthly permit limit for BOD (Biochemical oxygen demand). The permit limit for this parameter is a monthly average of FIVE(5) MG/L. Our monthly average was seven (7) MG/L. Treatment processes have been adjusted and no further violations have occurred. and there have been no known environmental impacts from this violation. The Pittsboro wastewater collection system has not experienced sanitary sewer overflows in which 1,000 or more gallons reached the surface waters of the State during the past fiscal year.
