SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW
Description of review activities, results, and conclusions: HPOWeb reviewed on 18 September
2013 and yielded no NR, SL, LD, DE, or SS properties in the Area of Potential EfFects (APE).
Transylvania County current GIS mapping, aerial photography, and tax information indicated an
APE of cultivated fields and woodland with no above-ground resources (viewed 18 September
2013). Constructed in 1959, Bridge No. 137 is a 21-foot-long, single-span, timber,
stringer/multi-beam bridge and is not eligible for the National Register according to the NCDOT
Historic Bridge Survey as it is not historically, architecturally, or technologically significant.
Google Maps "Street View" confirmed the absence of critical historic structures and landscapes
in the APE (viewed 18 September 2013).
No architectural survey is required for the project as currently defined.
Whv the available information vrovides a reliable basis for reasonablv predictinQ that there
are no unidentified si�nificant historic architectural or landscape resources in the proiect
area: APE extends 350 feet from either end of the existing bridge (SE-NW) and 100 feet from
the SR 1107 (East Fork Road) centerline (NE-SW) to encompass proposed construction
activities. The comprehensive architectural survey of Transylvania County (1990-1991), the
related publication, and later additions, as well as county GIS/tax materials and other visuals
clearly illustrate the absence of significant architectural resources (Laura A. W. Phillips and Deborah
Thompson, Transylvania: theArchitecturalHistoryofa Mountain County(Brevard: Transylvania County Joint Historic
Preservation Commission, 1998)). No National Register-listed properties are located within the APE,
including the Federal permit area.

site detour, please notify NCDOT Historic Architecture
as additional review mav be necessarv.
