REGAN secrerarn LINDA CULPEPPER Direclor Subject: Review of Progress Energy, Mayo Electric Generation Plant (NC 0038377) Environmental Monitoring Report (2017). Dear Mr. Copolo: Thank you for your submission of the 2017 Environmental Monitoring Data for the Mayo Electric Generation Plant. Based on a review of the fisheries and fish tissue data provided, it appears that trace elements in water, sediment and fish are generally restricted to the vicinity of the ash basin discharge, and that selenium levels in fish tissues are expected to continue their decline following the plant's latest (2014) upgrades to lessen selenium inputs to the lake. Furthermore, the fish community data provided suggest a relatively balanced and stable fish community in the lake. As it pertains to the limnological data, surface water Se and TI remained below detection levels at all sites in 2017 and 2017 nutrient concentrations and chlorophyll a values were within range of those observed by staff from the Water Sciences Section in 2014. However, we did note that Hg was slightly higher at sites 131, B2 and G2 in 2017 as compared with 2016 and 2017. If you have any questions regarding these comments or requests, please do not hesitate to contact me.
