This advertisement and a news release have been issued in compliance with North Carolina
General Statute 143-215.1C (a portion of the Clean Water Act of 1999). The below information
was sent to news reporters on April 25, 2018. The Charlotte Water crews responded to a
sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) found on April 24, 2018 near 4100 Oakdale Road. An estimated
15.4 million gallons reached Long Creek in the Catawba River Watershed. The overflow was
caused by a fallen tree eroding the creek bank which undermined the wastewater pipe.
Charlotte Water crews maintain more than 4,200 miles of wastewater pipe. Charges from
monthly water bills fund preventative maintenance, emergency response, and the safe daily
delivery of more than 82 million gallons of wastewater to five treatment plants, where
wastewater is treated to high water quality standards and released back into our waterways. If
