Project Description
• General Description of Project:
Construct grade separation of the NCRR/NS H-line near milepost H-73.8 (Crossing #904421 K)
and the CSX S-line near milepost S-164.2 (Crossing #643351A) to replace the Northeast
Maynard Road at-grade crossing in Cary, NC. Maynard Road provides access to the areas
surrounding downtown Cary as well as commercial and residential uses throughout the project
area. The NCRR/NS H-line and CSX S-line provide both freight and passenger service to the
east and west of Cary.
• MPO: Capital Area MPO (CAMPO)

Long Range Plan History
The Cary 2040 Community Plan identifies the project area west of Maynard Road as located in
the "East Chatham Gateway" subarea of the "Downtown Subareas Special Planning Area."
The project area east of Maynard Road is identified as located in a"Transit/Multifamily Oriented
Use" area in the "Eastern Cary Gateway Special Planning Area." The Plan identifies the
proposed roadway width of Maynard Road south of Chapel Hill Road as a five-lane, undivided
thoroughfare.
The Plan proposes several projects in the area, including the widening of Chapel Hill Road and
sidewalk projects along East Chatham Street.
Maynard Road currently serves three fixed GoCary bus routes through the project area:
Route 1: Maynard; Route 2: Maynard; and Route 6: Buck Jones. The Wake County Transit
Plan (WCTP) recommends bus rapid transit (BRT) between downtown Raleigh and downtown
Cary, most likely along Chapel Hill Road or Chatham Street. The WCTP also recommends
commuter rail service between Durham and Raleigh with a stop at the Cary Depot.
The Raleigh - Cary Rail Crossing Study recommends constructing a railroad bridge over
Northeast Maynard Road and shifting the Chatham Street/Maynard Road intersection to outside
of the 200-foot rail corridor. The Cary 2040 Community Plan identifies the railroad crossing of
Maynard Road and the NCRR/NS H-Line and CSX S-Line as "proposed grade separation."
The NCRR/NS rail line through the project area is part of the study corridor for the Southeast
High Speed Rail (SEHSR). The SEHSR project will provide passenger rail service between
Washington DC and Charlotte at speeds of 90-110 mph, while increasing the safety and
effectiveness of the transportation system by providing grade separations within the corridor.
The Cary Depot Expansion was undertaken as part of the Piedmont Improvement Program, a
completed Tier I I study for the SEHSR.
