A hard copy is in the mail to you as well. I reference our River plan and I've attached that to this email as well should you need it for these files. Thank you for addressing these slides in Wilson Creek. Water quality, in our Wild and Scenic Rivers in particular, is an important function of the forest lands we manage. Related to that, this year the US Forest Service and Trout Unlimited are planning some focused efforts to improve water quality in Wilson Creek. We are plan to implement some targeted road work in the upper reaches of the water shed this year and Trout Unlimited is planning a watershed assessment to evaluate all of our water crossings, locate slides, damaged trails and roads, etc. If you or any of the folks over at Corps or DOT are looking for some opportunity to work across boundaries in Wilson Creek feel free to send them my way. Attached is the permit application package provided by the NCDOT to repair the road instability issues. It includes the location, photos and a description of their proposed work. Our permit conditions require written verification from the federal agency with direct management responsibility for the wild and scenic river that the permit activity will not adversely affect the designation status. This must be received prior to the permit activity being conducted. As the NCDOT is anxious to begin repairs, for both safety reasons and to prevent further compromise of the road structure, please provide us a response at your earliest convenience. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need any further information. I have copied Heath Slaughter with the NCDOT and Dave Wanucha with NCDWR to keep them informed and so any questions can be answered faster. There are 2 slides. The flagged area is the southern slide and is about 30 feet long. The second slide is not as bad but we will probably want to address it too. It's about 300 feet north of the first and is about 20 feet long. Both areas are between SR 1336 and the Visitor's Center on SR 1328. We are proposing to riprap these areas to stabilize the roadway. I'm not seeing any known historic issues at the project location. The attached information should allow you to coordinate with the Forest Service on the Wild and Scenic designation while I put the permit application together. These two slide areas do not appear to be on the Forest Service property but it's all around us. Let me know if you have further questions. Coordinates are 35.95568 N, -81.76331 W.
