This is avel! drained soii vith a slope of lcss tlan 2 percen. It is subject ta frequent flooding for short periorls, bitt it is typically dry. The toe slope coisists of Tate loam (ThC). This series is Also well drained, but has a slape of S to 15 percent. Both soil types have the potential of producing arcaeologicRl sites due to being dry, fairly lecl, aud close to fi•esli vater. They also hae tle potential of containing intaci cultura! deposits due to the possible presence of lightly distrbed soils. As a result, it is recammended that subsurface testing be conducted on these soils. The fitat soil type is tltc Evard-Covice contplex (EvD). This series occupies only a minar area ou thc residential la►vn. Tlese are well drained loamy soils vith a slope of 15 to 3 percent. Sttbsurfacc testing is not nccessary for ttus series, siuce it is unlikely far signifscant depasits ta be Faund on slope of 15 percent or more. A reViev af the site files shov that at iest tvo large scale archaeological inwestigations lzave been ar•ied near khe bridge. All three sites are located east of Bridge No. 76 at nearby Bridge No. 12, tvhich crosses aver Tusquitee Creelc by tivly of Dovning Creek Road (SR 1325). The sites consist of ceranucs aid lithic uaterial from an unidcnNfied prehistoric period. The 19G USGS Nautalala topographic map plots Tusquitec Creek and Peckenvaod Branch, but no crossing ar road similar ko te current Tusquitee Creek Road are shovn (Figure 4}. The nearest road is a preecessor to Dovnings Creck Road ta khe east, yliicn runs the lengil oF Peckervaod Brsnch. Unfarlunately, this map displays n4 structures. By the 1930s, inaps sucl as thc 1935 Soil 5ui•vey for Clay County show a mare madern pictut-e of the area {I'igure 5). An arcfleoIogical recoluyflissatice snd ficltl su'vey vas carried out on March 18, 2414, to furfl3er assist in ealuating the project flrea, Bridge Na. 7b and Tuscuitee Creek Road cross Pecicervoad Brancii northeast to southtvest. Peckenvood Branch joins vitia 'Tusquitee Cteek approximately 45 rn (ca. 148 ft) nortivest of the bridgc. TUese vatexays are part of the Hitivassee drainage bAsin. Mos# of tue project rea residcs alang the Peckerwood Brancll'I'usquitee Creek floodlain, but the vestern end of the APE falls long a toe slope (Figurc 2). Open pastttre is found to tle south and southeast of the bridge (rigures 3nd 4), ►vile a residential praperty is to the southvest (Figure 5}. North of the road and bridge ar TEsquitee Creek and t snall landscaped garden (Figures 6 ard 7).
