The purpose of today's meeting is to discuss the purpose of and need for the proposed
project, alternatives to be studied in detail and bridging requirements.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
TIP Project R-4903 has been included in the 2009-2015 North Carolina State
Transportation Improvement Program (STEP) as the construction of an interchange at the
intersection of US 701 and NC 87 Bypass in Bladen County. The project location and
proposed project study area are shown on Figure 1.
PROJECT STATUS AND SCHEDULE
Project development studies for this project began in 2005. A Citizens Informational
Workshop was held on August 15, 2006 at the Elizabethtown Town Hall. Wetland
delineations, protected species surveys and historic architecture surveys have been
completed for the project.
Right of way acquisition and construction are scheduled for federal fiscal years 2011 and
2012, respectively, in the 2009-2015 STEP.
The cost estimate for the project included in the 2009-2015 STEP is $9,976,000. Of this
total, $500,000 is estimated for right of way acquisition, $76,000 for mitigation, and
$9,400,000 is estimated for construction. The latest cost estimates are $16,275,000 for
construction and $500,000 for right of way acquisition, which yields a grand total of
$16,775,000.
