The typical section varies along the pi-oject corridor, ai�d was selected so that the project would meet the
�urpose and i�eed of tha pro�ect with il�e minnnal footprint feasible. fJf the 5.5-mile corridar studied, this
resulted in 1.7 mi�es o� 3-Iaile road, 2.8 rniles of 4-la.ne divided road, and 1�nile with no irr�provemenls.
In addition, tl�e following avoida�ce and inuiimizatio�� measures were included u1 the design:
• Se�ected a best-fit aligntnent that tnuiunizes i�npacts to Watauga River, Laurel Forlc, and B�g
Brat�ch, u-�cluding wide��ing asya��netrically ui several locatioi�s.
• Shifted the alignment to the west beiween Sta 176+pp and 2b5+Ofl to r�duce it�}� ac ts ori anbmal
passageway parallel w ith the Watat�ga River and floodplains.
• Added severalretau�uig walls and concrete barriers to furtherreduce impaais �o streams.
• Used steeper slopes to minimize or avoid 'ullpacts in se�reral Iocations.
The follov�ring comrnitments have been inade, �nd wpll be discussed agaul at the CP 4B and �C meetings:
� The feasibility of holding the exi�ting utility line Uetween old Shull's Mill Road (north) and
Braadston� Road will be inwestigated.
• Te�nporaiy construction ease�nents will be kept o�.itside of the floadplain, ffoadw ay, and V4Tatauga
River rvhere feasible,
� Permanent c�nsti•uction and slope stakes will stay out of 1�0-year floodplain, floadway, and
W a�auga River, If not feasible, the Merger team will r�visit CP 4A.
