Attached are the results from the most recent semi-annual groundwater monitoring sampling
event conducted in April 2016 for the wells near the Area I, III and IV structural fills at the
Asheville Regional Airport. The results from these sampling events are included on the
GW59CCR forms per permit WQ0000020, dated September 2, 2015. As these structural fill
sampling events are not part of an NPDES permit, these forms were slightly modified and are
not signed.
Area I groundwater monitoring wells and surface water samples were collected on April 11,
2016. Area III groundwater monitoring wells were sampled on April 13, 2016 and Area IV
groundwater monitoring wells were sampled on April 12, 2016. Arsenic was detected in the
field blank for Area I, aluminum was detected in the field blank for Area III and arsenic and
aluminum were detected in the field blank for Area IV. Therefore, the data with concentrations
less than 10 times the field blank concentration are qualified with a 'B' flag on Form GW-59CCR.
Per our letter to Mr. Brett Laverty, NC DENR, dated March 2, 2105, DEP contacted the MSD
Industrial Waste Section and asked that they contact Mr. Laverty such that Mr. Laverty could
retrieve information directly from MSD regarding leachate quantity and quality for Area III and
Area IV leachate discharges. If this arrangement has proved unsuitable, please let Ms. Teresa
Williams know at 828-687-5240.
