Subject: Fort Fisher - Dredging Additional Information
Good Morning,
I have gone back through our files to answer the question about our current state of
capacity at Fort Fisher. As of January 2014 the amount of material that the Fort Fisher
spoil site can hold is 291,000 cubic yards. Since the time of that survey NCDOT dredged
and deposited only 21,689 cubic yards (2014/2015) into the site. The project that we are
requesting authorization for states that 168,749 cubic yards of material will need to be
removed from the channel and basin to get the depths to the permitted depth. There is
room for over 260,000 cubic yards in the Fort Fisher site and will more than adequately
hold our material.
The original PCN that was submitted cut off the Project Description write up in Section
B. Below are those complete responses and I will be sure to get information on the
electronic PCN going forward.
3a. Describe the existing conditions on the site and the general land use in the vicinity
of the project at the time of this application:
Answer: This property is used by the North Carolina Ferry Division to transfer automobiles,
visitors, locals, and goods to and from Southport, NC to Fort Fisher, NC via ferry vessels.
Currently there is significant shoaling in the channel. Dredging the permitted area out will
ensure the safe passage of the vessels and the riders on board.
3e. Describe the overall project in detail, including the type of equipment to be used
Answer: The project will include removing 168,749 cubic feet from the permitted channel and
basin by means of the state owned pipeline Dredge Manteo. Work shall begin in March and
will end for the moratorium that begins April 1. The spoil site at Fort Fisher has the available
room to hold over 260,000 cubic yards. This is more than adequate for our requested project.
A pipeline dredge, excavator, barge, tug boats, and bulldozer will be used for this project
