Federal Aid No: Funding.• Federal Permit Required? Yes ❑ No Cleveland State Minimum Criteria Checklist State ❑ Federal Permit Type: USACE Project Description: Replace Bridge 192 on SR 1662 (Will Dixon Rd.) over Maple Creek in Cleveland County. The Area of Potential Effects (A.P.E.) is approximately 91 meters (300 ft.) long and 30 meters (100 ft.) wide. This includes the area within 45 meters (150 ft.) from each end of the bridge and 15 meters (50 ft.) on each side of the road. No easements will be required. No design plans were provided. SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions: The review included an examination of a topographic map, the Cleveland County soil survey, an aerial photograph, and listings of previously recorded sites, previous archaeological surveys, and previous environmental reviews at the Office of State Archaeology (O.S.A.). The bridge is oriented northwest to southeast, but is considered east-west for this review. The topographic map (Lawndale, N.C.) shows the bridge is located in a moderately wide creek valley. The landforms consist of floodplain along both sides of the stream, and gently- to moderately-sloped ridge toes on each side. The A.P.E. for this project is small, and most of it is occupied by the floodplain of Maple Creek. The A.P.E. does include a small portion of ridge toes on each side of the bridge. The flooplain is depicted as wooded, indicating it is probably not suitable for agriculture (poorly-drained?). The ridge toes in the northwest and southeast quadrants are depicted as cleared. There are no structures within or adjacent to the A.P.E. The Cleveland County soil survey shows the soils in the A.P.E. are Tocoa loam (0-2% slopes), occasionally flooded, in the floodplain, and Pacolet sandy clay loam, moderately eroded, on the ridge toes. Toccoa loam is an occasionally-flooded, moderately well-drained soil found on floodplains. Pacolet sandy clay loam, moderately eroded, is a well-drained soil found on side slopes. In general, landforms with these soils have a low potential for archaeological sites. The aerial photograph shows the A.P.E. is wooded in all four quadrants. The forest in the floodplain are hardwoods, and there are pines on the ridge toes in the southwest and northeast quadrants. The edge of the northwest quadrant includes a residential yard and driveway. (A more recent aerial photograph shows the pines in the northeast and southwest quadrants have been cleared.) "No ARCHAEOLOGYSURVEYREQUIRED " form for Minor Transportation Projects as Qualified in the 201 S Programmatic Agreement. 1 of 6 Project Tracking No. 17-OS-0005 A review of information at the O.S.A. shows there are no previously recorded archaeological sites within or adjacent to the A.P.E. The A.P.E. has not been previously surveyed for archaeological sites. The A.P.E. is not within any projects that have been previously reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office (HPO). Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE: The A.P.E. of the project is small. The landforms in the A.P.E. have a low potential for archaeological sites.
